Area Converter

Convert between square metres, square feet, hectares, acres, square kilometres and more.

The area converter converts between metric and imperial units of area, which is essential when buying or renting property. In India, land is often quoted in square feet, square yards (gaj) and acres, while official records may use square metres or hectares.

How to use the converter

  • Enter the area value.
  • Choose the unit you have and the one you need.
  • Use the table to see the same area in every supported unit.
  • Handy for comparing property listings across regions.

How the conversion works

Value in square metres = value × factor of the source unit
Result = value in square metres ÷ factor of the target unit

Worked example

100 square metres to square feet

100 m² ÷ 0.09290304 = 1,076.39 ft²

The same area is 119.6 square yards or about 0.0247 acres.

Who should use this area converter

  • Property buyers and sellers comparing listings where one quotes square feet and another square metres or square yards.
  • Anyone dealing with land records, where hectares, acres and local units such as gaj or bigha all appear.
  • Interior and construction work estimating flooring, tiling, painting or carpet in the unit the supplier uses.
  • Farmers and investors comparing agricultural land sizes across states that use different customary measurements.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing square feet with feet. A room 10 feet by 12 feet is 120 square feet. Multiplying a length by itself instead of by the other dimension is a common slip.
  • Mixing up carpet area with built-up or super built-up area. Builders quote the largest figure. The usable carpet area can be 15–25% smaller, so compare like with like before valuing a property.
  • Assuming a bigha is a fixed size. It ranges from roughly 1,600 to over 27,000 square feet depending on the state, and sometimes the district. Always confirm the local definition.
  • Treating an acre and a hectare as interchangeable. A hectare is about 2.47 acres, so the difference on a large plot is substantial.
  • Ignoring unit conversion in land documents. Government records may use hectares while the local market quotes gaj. Convert before comparing prices per unit.

Land units used in India

Indian property listings mix units freely, which is why conversions matter. A square yard is called a gaj and equals 9 square feet, so a 100 gaj plot is about 900 square feet. An acre is 43,560 square feet or about 4,047 square metres, and a hectare is 10,000 square metres — roughly 2.47 acres. For apartments, the number that reflects what you can actually use is carpet area, not the super built-up figure used in marketing.

Customary units are the trickiest part. A bigha, guntha or cent means different things in different states, and sometimes in different districts of the same state. When a price looks unusually good per unit, check which definition of the unit the seller is using before comparing it with another listing.

Area units explained

Carpet area
The usable floor area within the walls. Everything you can actually walk on and furnish.
